Spinal decompression for Herniated disc treatment

It has been a while since I have updated this blog, But I am back and ready to journal some of the recent clinical findings and patient success stories.
The Weather here in NYC has been nut's, last week it snowed almost a foot followed by a inch or two of ice.
A patient wrenched his back that Sunday and finally made it into my office today. He spent the past 4 days in bed doubled over in pain and medicating with little results.
It was very obvious to me based on his mechanism of injury- he was shoveling a driveway for 3 Hours! that he irritated his discs and tweaked his lumbar muscles.
Not many of my patients and fellow Manhattan residents do much shoveling but this guy did and then some.
I started him with some Cox flexion distraction technique to reduce his nerve irritation (He was complaining of Sciatica like symptoms) and increase Disc height (His fourth Lumbar disc was previously herniated)
We followed up with the Graston Technique which is a form of ISTM or instrument assisted soft tissue mobilization and some percussion into his Glut medius and Piriformis.
His fourth lumbar needed a chiropractic adjustment and his cervical spine needed some Cervical spinal decompression.
The next step was onto the DRX 9000 Spinal Decompression machine which I firmly believe and clinical studies show to provide the most successful outcomes and patient comfort.
After the spinal decompression with used  (Ice) and inferential stimulation,
We wrapped up the session by stabilizing his Back Muscles with Rock tape which lifts the skin away from the muscles and fascia, which decompresses the area.
He left like he was worked on and tomorrow should feel loads better.
What drove me back to this Blog is the fact that 94 people are dying a day from abuse and misuse of prescribed narcotics that are given to patients by their trusted family doctor. A recent study by the American college of physicians https://www.acponline.org/acp-newsroom/american-college-of-physicians-issues-guideline-for-treating-nonradicular-low-back-pain
pointed to new guidelines that leaned away from prescribing medication for non-radiating pain.
When we combine Chiropractic care and Spinal Decompression we help so many patients avoid unnecessary surgery and avoid dangerous narcotics.
What has always fascinated me as a Chiropractor that has practiced for 20 plus years in Manhattan and dedicated myself to nonsurgical techniques such as Spinal decompression was Our bodies Amazing ability to heal it self once you remove the irritation to the nervous system- not only does the pain go way but the body is stronger and patients are happier and can return to moving and enjoying their life.
