Kinesio tape

Today was an exciting day! I was interviewed on the Early Show on CBS news here in New York on Kinesio tape.

watch here

The segment was on the Olympic tape called "Kinesio Tape"
I really wanted to go into detail on how this taping method compliments my treatment.
After the segment I had a 85 year man with chronic right knee pain come in.
His knee was swollen, I taped it and he started moving better right away, this is not a placebo!

Read below

Some limited data suggest it may be effective. In July, the Journal of Orthopaedic & Sports Therapy published a study of 42 people with shoulder injuries. Half of them were treated with Kinesio tape applied in a pattern designed to support the injured muscle. The other half were given a “sham” treatment in which two strips of tape were simply pressed across the arm. The study was conducted by physical therapists at Winn Army Community Hospital in Fort Stewart, Ga., who didn’t receive funding from the tape company. Notably, the study participants who received the real therapeutic tape treatment reported an immediate improvement in pain.
Last year, Research in Sports Medicine published a study from San Jose State University showing that in 30 healthy test subjects, use of the tape along the lower trunk area appeared to increase the range of motion.
Kinesio claims that in addition to supporting injured muscles and joints, the new taping method helps relieve pain by lifting the skin, allowing blood to flow more freely to the injured area. The tape is also widely used in pediatric physical therapy for muscle disorders like cerebral palsy.
In Living Well Medical both out Chiropractors and Physical therapist utilize Kinesio taping methods. It is also available for sale, but I usually like for patients to learn how to use the tape properly. If it is not applied properly it can cause skin irritation and discomfort.

WHAT'S KINESIO TAPE? New York Kinesio taping

Watching Olympian Kerri Walsh compete in beach volleyball last week, many viewers were wondering the same thing: what is that black thing on her shoulder?
A tattoo? A bizarre fashion statement? No. Ms. Walsh was sporting a new type of athletic tape called Kinesio, touted by physical therapists as a better way to relieve pain and promote healing of injured muscles.
The appearance of Kinesio on the well-toned Ms. Walsh — she even wore it while meeting President Bush — has spurred international interest in the little-known brand. In black, pink, blue and beige, the tape has been spotted on a number of other Olympians, including the shoulder of U.S. water polo player Lauren Wenger and the elbows of Canadian Greco Roman wrestler Ari Taub. Members of Spain’s basketball team and Jamaica’s track team are wearing it.
Ms. Walsh and the other athletes don’t have endorsement deals with Kinesio USA; the company simply donated 50,000 rolls of the tape to 58 countries for use at the Olympic Games. But whether its appearance on the international athletic scene is a sign of its therapeutic benefit or just smart marketing remains to be seen.
Traditionally, white athletic tapes are wrapped around gauze to form a stiff bandage that immobilizes a joint or muscle. By comparison, the 100-percent cotton Kinesio tape is said to be modeled on the thickness and elasticity of real skin. The flexible tape is applied to the skin in specific patterns, depending on the injury, a technique designed to create support and guide injured muscles and joints without limiting the athlete’s range of motion.
“This tape moves with the body, so the biomechanics are still there,'’ said John Jarvis, director of Kinesio USA.
Both the tape and the new wrapping technique have spread mostly by word-of-mouth among athletes and trainers who swear by it. Cycling great Lance Armstrong reportedly dedicates a page to the tape in his latest book. Recently soccer superstar David Beckham traded jerseys after a game and was spotted with pink Kinesio tape on his back.

Given Kinesio’s high profile at the Olympics, it seems likely that we will be seeing more and more of it. Mr. Jarvis said the tape already is used by many professional basketball, baseball and football teams. Before the Olympics, the company Web site received about 600 views a day. Since Ms. Walsh appeared with the spider-like Kinesio pattern on her shoulder, Web traffic has jumped to 345,000 views daily.

Spinal Decompression NYC

NEW CASE STUDY SHOWS A DRAMATIC DECREASE IN DISC LESION SIZE AFTER TREATMENT ON THE DRX9000™ TRUE NON-SURGICAL SPINAL DECOMPRESSION SYSTEM!

The DRX9000 was created to provide relief of LBP (low back pain) caused by herniated discs, degenerative disc disease, sciatica, and facet syndrome. A new case report underwritten with a grant from Axiom Worldwide is now featured in Volume 3, Issue 1 of the US Musculoskeletal Review 2008. The case study titled, Management of Discogenic Low-back Pain with a Non-surgical Decompression System (DRX9000™) – Case Report, reveals the pre- and post-MRI findings of a 31-year old male with a history of low back pain. Prior to treatment with the DRX9000, an MRI of the lumbar spine revealed a left paracentral disc extrusion at L5/S1 that was compressing and displacing the left S1 nerve root. In addition, degenerative disc disease was noted at L4/5 and L5/S1. The patient also reported an overall pain level of 9 on a 0-10 scale. The patient underwent 27 treatments on the DRX9000 over a seven-week period and at his final treatment he reported a pain level of 3 that occurred only 30% of the time. Follow-up MRI “demonstrated a dramatic decrease in the size of the disc lesion as well as the compression placed on the left S1 nerve root.” The authors conclude, “Clinical and imaging data continue to emerge providing further validation of the safe and effective treatment of disc-related LBP utilizing the DRX9000.”

Kinesio tape NYC-Kinesio taping New York

Kinesio tape NYC-Kinesio taping New York
www.drshoshany.com
Kinesio taping is used to stabilize a joint and increase circulation and decrease pain.
I have been using kineso tape in my NYC Chiropractic practice for the past 5 years.
It has actually helped me recover from a torn labrum and a rotator cuff injury.
As a Chiropractor I depend on my shoulder and when I injured my left shoulder I definitely did not want a surgery and deal with 6 months of Rehab.
My treatment consisted of the Graston technique, Cold laser therapy and Kinesio taping to stabilize my shoulder and allow for optimal healing.I posted this picture of Kerri Walsh in the 2008 Olympics wearing a Kinesio tape job on her right shoulder to help stabilize her shoulder from a rotator cuff surgery in November.

The other picture is of Lance Armstrong at the New York Marathon to help him with shin splints.
I have used Kinesio tape in my Manhattan Physical therapy/Chiropractic office with fantastic results.

Free Floating Spinal decompression?

www.drshoshany.com
A recently new addition to the spinal decompression world is known as "free floating spinal decompression".
I received the mailer and I was not impressed. The first thing I thought was did this doctor go to Ace hardware and build it himself?
No this is actually manufactured and sold as a piece of "medical equipment"
I don't like to discredit any doctors methods but I have to say that there is so much more research on traditional spinal decompression using the DRX 9000 visit my website at www.drshoshany.com
I have seen recent new tables like the Exten-trac elite that are build much better than this device.
I am not even sure that the free floating table has a FDA clearance.
I also know that spinal decompression to be effective needs to have a period of a pull and a period of rest or a ramp up and ramp down.
I don't see how this chair can do this.
One other aspect that I see as a flaw in design is that the "chair" is keeping the patient in the seated position, this position produces the highest amount of disc pressure.I am not even sure that this can be called spinal decompression.
True spinal decompression involves a logarithmic curve this table can not do that.
The DRX 9000, the Vax-D tables can.
That is why I stick to the tried and true tables in my NYC spinal decompression practice.

Herniated disc nyc, Sciatica, Chronic back pain treatment

Herniated disc nyc, Sciatica, Chronic back pain treatment in Manhattan.
www.drshoshany.com
I wanted to update my Chiropractic NYC blog.
One of my most recent success stories is about a patient that flew up from the Domincan Republic to be treated with Spinal decompression therapy.
He has been in daily for the past 8 visits, His symptoms have been greatly reduced and his muscle strength has increased. He is now able to put on his shoes without pain and no longer needs to take the vicodin that he has been taking for the past 3 months due to the pain intesity.
The combination of Spinal Decompression therapy on the DRX 9000,Cox Flexion decompression and Core strengthening on the SpineForce and Power Plate, Cold laser therapy, and my newest weapon- Oxygen therapy have all allowed him to feel better quicker.
He has to head back home within the next two weeks so I am doing everything possible to increase his results. Patients suffering with herniated discs that do not want surgery will do anything to feel better, sometimes they are forced into believing surgery is the only way. This patient was told that a back surgery was his only option.

Patients that suffer with Sciatica, or Fibromyalgia can benefit from Oxygen therapy.
